Psychotherapy first aid/crisis intervention stress management is a specific, 7-phase interactive crisis intervention model used to facilitate psychological closure and reconstruction following exposure to a traumatic event (crisis or critical incident). EMDR is also utilized. CISM has been a go to during times of personal and national disasters like COVID, school shootings, racial unrest and their sequelae. Goals of crisis incident stress management include stabilizing, normalizing, restoring adaptive functioning, and identifying individuals and/or groups who may need additional professional intervention. "It is not the stress that kills us, it is our reaction to it" (Hans Seyle). The goal is to intervene quickly to stop the symptoms from becoming entrenched.
Often, when something traumatic happens, it seems to get locked in the brain with the original picture, sounds, thoughts, feelings, and so on. Since the experience is locked there, it continues to be triggered whenever a reminder comes up. This can be the basis for a lot of discomfort and sometimes a lot of negative emotions, such as fear and helplessness, that we can't seem to control. Sometimes these emotions are connected with old experiences that are being triggered.
